Just ask Jeff Bauman. On April 15, Jeff was near the finish line for the Boston Marathon, holding a handmade sign in support of his runner-girlfriend Erin.
When she was still about a mile away, the two bombs went off, killing three people and injuring hundreds. Bauman lost his legs that day.
When Jeff regained consciousness in the hospital after two surgeries , he was able to provide the FBI a detailed physical description of one of the bombers.
His information led directly to the identification of one of the scumbag brothers responsible for this atrocity. Immediately, Jeff was hailed as a hero — both locally and nationally.
The film does a nice job of telling Jeff's story and how his life unfolded over the next few months. He may seem an odd choice to adapt the film from the book by Jeff Bauman and Bret Witter screenplay by John Pollono , but the story is so moving and heart-warming, and the three lead actors are so good that we immediately connect with each of them.
Gyllenhaal is remarkable as usual as the working class local boy who truly believes his lucky seat and beer determine success or failure for his beloved Bruins and Red Sox.
His initial portrayal is spot on for the normal guy who seems caught in the web of eternal teenage mentality so common in the male species.
Maslany is terrific as the guilt-ridden, confused-yet-strong, on-again-off- again girlfriend to Jeff. She fights through being treated as an outsider by the family, and the daily grind of caring for a guy who needs constant help.
The twice Oscar nominated Miranda Richardson is unlike we have ever seen her on screen. Despite being a Brit, Ms. Richardson captures the Boston sauciness in more ways than one and takes no 'stuff' from anyone.
Her performance is stunning. Of course, at its core, this is an inspirational story about how a normal guy became a hero after a tragic event.
We see the recreation of the flag-waving at the Boston Bruins game, and the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park. We also see the obstacles faced when rehabilitation and care- giving becomes too much to bear.
Carlos Arredondo and his cowboy hat and heroics are also given much-deserved space here. His back story is heart-breaking, and a reminder that everyone has a story, and each of us can be a hero in some way.
Since life isn't a movie, the realities are that Jeff and Erin have since divorced, but that in no way reduces the impact of their touching story that inspires each of us to be stronger.

Edit Did You Know? Trivia Jake Gyllenhaal's eyes are blue in real life, however, in the movie they are dark brown. Goofs When Jeff comes out for the national anthem during the hockey game, both benches are empty and both teams hockey players are nowhere to be seen.
In real life, the anthem is sung just prior to puck drop with all of the players and coaches present; either on the ice at the blue lines or on the bench.
This reality also separates hockey from other sports such as baseball, basketball and football which, apart from huge games like season openers or championships, usually complete the anthem singing during warmups or while the players are still in the dugout or tunnel.
Additionally, one of the advertisements on the boards is for the NHL's playoff bracket contest despite the fact that the division re-alignment that created the bracket system in which teams must first play the teams in their division before advancing to the conference finals was first instituted during the season and not during the playoffs in which the film is supposed to be taking place.

Yes No Report this. Add the first question. Erin comforts him and insists he talk to his family about the fragility of his mental state and the impact his newfound exposure is having on it.
Later that night, they make love for the first time since his injury. After an argument between Patty and Erin, Jeff finally admits that he doesn't want to do any more interviews.
A disheartened Patty tells him that she only wishes for the world to see how amazing her son is. She soon begins enabling Jeff's worst tendencies, including his laziness and affinity for drinking.
He begins missing physical therapy appointments, due to long nights of drinking usually with Patty. Erin, who has since moved in, finds Patty blacked out on the couch and an unconscious Jeff in a bathtub, covered in vomit.
The next day, she snaps at Patty for her selfishness and negligence before calling Jeff out for his self-pity and refusal to stand up to his mother.
Erin storms off, leaving Jeff and Patty to drive home alone. That night, Jeff blows off Erin to drink with his brothers at a bar. Two patrons at the bar begin asking Jeff questions about the bombing, insinuating that the event was a government conspiracy to start a war in Iran and Jeff was paid to look like a victim.
Insulted, Jeff and his brothers initiate a bar fight with the patrons. Erin picks him up later that night and tells him that she's pregnant.
Jeff begins to panic and tells her that he isn't ready to be a father, causing Erin to scold him for constantly running away from his problems.
She leaves him in the car without removing his wheelchair from the trunk, enters their apartment, and packs her things.
Jeff crawls to the apartment door and has a PTSD flashback of the bombing in its entirety. Jeff meets with Carlos , a man who cared for him in the immediate aftermath of the bombing saving his life.
Carlos tells him about his son, a Marine who died in Iraq. After attempting suicide, Carlos was forced to attend his son's funeral in a stretcher.
His younger son, unable to cope with the death of his older brother and the constant state of pain his father was in, killed himself. Carlos confides that saving Jeff helped him make peace with the death of his sons and the blame he placed upon himself because of them.
Jeff begins to understand that his will to live in the face of adversity is what both comforts and inspires people.
He stops drinking and begins to take his rehab more seriously. He leaves Erin a voicemail apologizing for his behavior, finally taking full responsibility for his immaturity and fear of commitment.
Erin watches at home and smiles. After the game, dozens of people come up to Jeff and tell him how and why he has so heavily impacted their lives.
He and Erin meet at a diner where he walks with his prosthetics for the first time without assistance. He tells Erin he loves her, to which she replies, "Good.
